Eltrombopag (brand names Promacta, Revolade, and Alvaiz) is a prescription medication primarily used to treat a low blood platelet count (thrombocytopenia) in certain blood disorders. It works by stimulating the bone marrow to produce more platelets.
Specifically, eltrombopag is approved for:
Chronic Immune (Idiopathic) Thrombocytopenia (ITP): Used in adults and children (ages 1 and older) when other treatments (like corticosteroids, immunoglobulins, or spleen removal surgery) have been insufficient. The goal is to increase the platelet count enough to reduce the risk of bleeding, not to normalize the count.
Thrombocytopenia in Chronic Hepatitis C: Used in adults with a long-term hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection to increase platelet counts, making it possible to start and maintain interferon-based antiviral therapy. It is not used with direct-acting antiviral agents alone.
Severe Aplastic Anemia (SAA): Used in adults and children (ages 2 and older) in combination with standard immunosuppressive therapy as a first-line treatment. It is also used alone to treat adults with SAA who have not responded well to other immunosuppressive treatments.
Eltrombopag is not indicated for treating low platelet counts caused by conditions other than those listed above, nor is it used for myelodysplastic syndrome (MDS) due to an increased risk of the condition progressing to acute myeloid leukemia (AML).
